Lead Web Developer (Full Stack):

Role Type: 6 months - Fixed Term Contract, Full-Time

Hours: 37.5 per week

Location: Stoke Gifford, Bristol (moving to central Bristol in the near future)

Role Specification:

We are looking for a highly motivated and experienced Full Stack Web Developer to lead on developing and optimising Open Bionics’ web platforms; which currently include the Prosthetist Portal and Shop (Ruby on Rails application running on Heroku) and www.openbionics.com (a Wordpress marketing site). This is a really exciting opportunity to create incredible digital experiences for people with limb differences and talented clinicians. You’ll be working on a wide variety of back end and front end projects, have lots of autonomy, and be happy to chip in with whatever needs doing. Open Bionics is a start-up and has ambitious growth plans, which will enable you to grow your personal career and responsibilities along with the company.

Note: This role is initially a 6-month Fixed Term Contract, with a view to extend dependant on business requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead on developing and optimising Open Bionics’ web platforms; actively identifying, planning and implementing dev solutions in response to business needs. Create the web development strategy and deliver both back end and front end work to incredibly high standards.
  • Work closely with the Digital Lead, Videographer / Photographer and Lead Designer to deliver incredible web experiences that bring alive Open Bionics’ engaging digital content for target audiences, and drive lead generation.
  • Ensure Open Bionics’ websites are fully operational at all times. Ensure high-performance and manage all technical aspects of Open Bionics’ web platforms, including implementing and proactively optimising for speed, responsiveness and applying SEO best practices such as Webmaster tools and Google Search Console.
  • Regularly report on web performance and user experience. Use Google Analytics to report on conversion tracking, campaign and other marketing monitoring and measuring techniques. As part of the Marketing Department, you’ll deliver on agreed Marketing KPIs.
  • Continually improve your knowledge of new web and mobile technologies, recommending best practice, suggesting areas for improvement, and testing new ideas.

A successful first six months at Open Bionics would include:

  • Delivering a range of innovative and exciting digital experiences for target audiences
  • Developing the Prosthetist Portal as a key communications channel for clinicians
  • Building new Wordpress functionality to improve user sign-up conversion rates by 5%
  • Working as part of the Marketing Team to improve web traffic by 50%
  • Implementing effective tracking and monitoring to inform a program of continuous optimisation.

Person Scorecard:

  • 2-5 years or more proven experience of web development.
  • Proven experience of CRO, SEO, UX + UI development and digital storytelling, working as part of a fast-paced marketing department.
  • Front-End skillset: Web fundamentals like HTML, JavaScript, and CSS. CSS preprocessors like Sass or LESS, JavaScript frameworks like AngularJS, React, or Ember etc., or JS-based build tools like Grunt, Gulp, and Bower, Libraries like jQuery or Backbone.js, Front-end (CSS) frameworks like Foundation or Bootstrap
  • Back-End skillset: API design and development, Web fundamentals like HTML, JavaScript, and CSS, Server-side languages like Ruby, PHP, Python, Java, JavaScript, and .Net, Database technologies like PostgreSQL, and Solidus. Web server technologies like Node.js, J2EE, Apache, Nginx, ISS, etc. Frameworks related to their server-side language of choice like: Express.js, Ruby on Rails, CakePHP, etc.
  • Evidence of facilitation skills - comfortable with both listening to and sharing technical ideas.
